Microsoft has signed a new agreement with clean energy aggregator and financing platform Powertrust to support the deployment of 270 MW of distributed solar projects across Mexico and Brazil over the next four years. Under the deal, Microsoft will purchase Renewable Energy Certificates generated by the portfolio, advancing its goal to match all of its electricity consumption with renewables by 2025 and to become carbon negative by 2030, while helping accelerate the clean energy transition in Latin America.

The projects will be spread across multiple sites and are designed to deliver “high impact” benefits for underserved communities, including lower energy bills for low income households and community organisations, local job creation in solar installation and maintenance, and support for education, healthcare and infrastructure initiatives. By focusing on distributed solar in regions with limited access to clean energy, the partnership aims to combine corporate climate action with community empowerment, offering a model for how large technology companies can use their procurement power to drive both decarbonisation and social impact.
