US Government Takes Steps to Boost Carbon Offset Market Credibility
The United States is set to release new guidelines for carbon offsets to enhance market confidence and ensure genuine emissions reductions.
On July 24, 2025, the European Commission announced a temporary and simplified solution for companies that already report on sustainability topics like environmental and social impact. This “quick fix” lets these companies continue using their current reporting methods, with only small updates, instead of switching immediately to the new, more detailed EU rules. The goal is to help companies avoid extra work and confusion while the full rules are still being finalized.
This change mainly affects large companies preparing for the new Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). By allowing them to keep using what they already have in place, the EU hopes to make the transition smoother and less costly. The full set of new sustainability reporting requirements is still expected later in 2025, but until then, this shortcut gives businesses a bit more time to adjust.
