DHL Express and Shell have signed a one-year agreement to supply 25,000 tons of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to Brussels Airport, marking a significant step in reducing emissions from air freight operations. The SAF, which is made from waste and renewable feedstocks, will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by around 80,000 tons of CO2e compared to traditional fossil jet fuel. This initiative is part of DHL’s broader sustainability efforts, aiming to reduce logistics-related emissions and offer more sustainable solutions to its customers.
The SAF will be used in DHL’s GoGreen Plus program, which helps clients lower their Scope 3 emissions through insetting, allowing them to reduce emissions within their own supply chains rather than relying on traditional offsetting. DHL aims to use 30% SAF across all air transportation by 2030 and to achieve net-zero logistics-related emissions by 2050.
The “urban heat island” effect is a well-documented phenomenon where urban areas are generally warmer than surrounding rural environments due to human activities and the concentration of buildings and infrastructure.
