Boeing has signed a multi-year agreement with Carbonfuture for at least 40,000 tonnes of durable carbon dioxide removal credits, described as one of the aviation sector’s largest procurements of high-durability CDR. The credits are initially sourced from a diversified portfolio of four biochar projects across the Global South. Biochar is a charcoal-like material made from organic biomass that is added to soil to improve fertility and durably sequester carbon. Carbonfuture’s digital Trust Infrastructure tracks the full removal process from biochar production through to soil application and associated legal title, enabling monitoring and verification across the credits’ lifecycle.
Under the agreement, Boeing will apply the credits to its residual Scope 3 Category 6 business travel emissions, consistent with its broader approach of prioritizing emissions reductions and using carbon removals for hard-to-abate residuals. The framework also includes an option for Boeing to purchase additional credits in future, and the deal is positioned as supporting ICAO’s CORSIA-aligned climate goals for aviation.
