Holcim, a global leader in construction materials, has partnered with climate tech company 44.01 to launch an innovative pilot project in the United Arab Emirates aimed at capturing and mineralizing carbon dioxide (CO₂) from cement production, one of the hardest-to-decarbonize industrial sectors. The project aligns with Holcim’s NextGen Growth 2030 strategy and supports the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 ambitions.
The Fujairah-based project is designed to capture around 5 tons of CO₂ per day directly from a cement plant and inject it into underground rock formations, where it naturally transforms into stable minerals, providing a permanent and safe method of carbon storage. The partnership involves Fujairah Natural Resources Corporation and NT Energies, who will implement Shell CANSOLV™ carbon capture technology on-site.
This initiative represents the world’s first deployment of combined industrial cement CO₂ capture and in-situ mineralization, positioning the industry to permanently reduce emissions and providing a scalable model for global replication.
