Masdar has entered into an agreement with TotalEnergies to explore the development of a commercial project that converts green hydrogen to methanol and subsequently to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in Abu Dhabi. This initiative aims to decarbonize challenging sectors like aviation and maritime by utilizing CO2 captured from industrial sources as a feedstock alongside green hydrogen produced through renewable energy-powered electrolysis.
The partnership follows a successful test flight demonstrating the conversion potential of methanol to SAF. This project aligns with the UAE’s Low Carbon Hydrogen Policy and National Hydrogen Strategy, reinforcing the country’s commitment to sustainability and energy security while positioning it as a leader in low-carbon hydrogen production by 2031.
