Tech giants Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Salesforce have launched the Symbiosis Coalition, an advanced market commitment collaboration aiming to bolster the development and expansion of the nature-based carbon removal market, pledging to contract up to 20 million tons of nature-based carbon removal credits collectively.
With a focus on advancing global climate goals through impactful, science-driven restoration projects, the coalition seeks to address the urgent need highlighted in the landmark 2022 IPCC report for scaling carbon dioxide removal methods to mitigate climate change.
By acknowledging the potential of nature-based solutions, such as ecosystem restoration projects, to significantly reduce emissions, the coalition aims to overcome barriers hindering the scaling of these solutions, including challenges related to engaging Indigenous Peoples, ensuring environmental co-benefits, and building public trust.
Through an advance market commitment and adherence to quality pillars guiding project selection criteria, the coalition intends to stimulate demand and facilitate the procurement of nature-based carbon removal credits, initially focusing on afforestation, reforestation, and revegetation projects, with plans to expand to include mangrove restoration projects in the future.
